Chance glass closed in 1981. The site has been previously used for performances and events. This Grade ll listed building is on the at risk register.

I did not know it was a submarine engine but i knew it used 5 gallon diesel hourly and was ran regularly on tuesdays and to test it you stopped the electric pump to see if it cut in, and it did-noisily! Just to pump canal cooling water thru glass rolls. I had the “pleasure” of starting it once only courtesy of Ray Drury, ear defenders on!
I think it looks a little small for a submarine diesel – though if you can identify the engine, it may well be that the submarine museum in Gosport can let you know if it was a type of engine installed in submarines. http://www.submarine-museum.co.uk
